Nepal | 10 Days | Maximum Altitude: 5,545m | Challenging Trip Summary Journey into the heart of the Himalayas on one of the world's most iconic mountain adventures. Our 10-Day Everest Base Camp Trek follows the legendary trail through Nepal's Khumbu region, taking us from the mountain airstrip at Lukla through traditional Sherpa villages, spectacular valleys and some of the most dramatic mountain scenery anywhere on earth. We'll trek through Namche Bazaar, beneath the unmistakable pyramid of Ama Dablam, continue into the high mountains through Pangboche and Dingboche, and eventually reach Everest Base Camp at 5,364m at the foot of the mighty Khumbu Icefall. The adventure doesn't finish there. From Gorak Shep we'll make an early ascent of Kala Patthar (approximately 5,545m), one of the great Himalayan viewpoints and an opportunity to experience spectacular views towards Mount Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori and the surrounding giants. This is an accelerated Everest Base Camp itinerary, designed for fit and experienced walkers who want to experience the classic EBC journey within a shorter timeframe. Long mountain days, significant altitude and consecutive days of trekking make this a serious challenge – but also an unforgettable adventure. No technical mountaineering experience is required, but a good level of mountain fitness is essential.

The Itinerary

1

Day 1

Day 1 – Kathmandu → Lukla → Phakding

Trek: approx. 6.2km Our Himalayan adventure begins with the spectacular flight into Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. After meeting our trekking team and organising our equipment, we begin on foot, following the trail through mountain villages and alongside the Dudh Koshi River towards Phakding. It's deliberately a relatively short first trekking day, allowing us to settle into the rhythm of the mountains. Overnight: Phakding

2

Day 2

Day 2 – Phakding → Namche Bazaar

Trek: approx. 7.4km Today we enter Sagarmatha National Park and continue along the Dudh Koshi valley, crossing the river on the famous suspension bridges. The final section involves a sustained climb through forest before we eventually reach Namche Bazaar, the historic Sherpa trading centre dramatically positioned amongst the mountains. Overnight: Namche Bazaar

3

Day 3

Day 3 – Namche Bazaar → Pangboche

Leaving Namche, we continue deeper into the Khumbu with increasingly impressive Himalayan scenery. The trail takes us towards Tengboche and through the valley beneath some of Nepal's most recognisable mountains, including Ama Dablam, Lhotse and Everest, before continuing towards the traditional Sherpa village of Pangboche. Overnight: Pangboche

4

Day 4

Day 4 – Pangboche → Dingboche

We continue climbing steadily into increasingly high-altitude terrain. Vegetation becomes noticeably thinner as we leave the forests behind and enter the broad mountain valley leading towards Dingboche, surrounded by an extraordinary amphitheatre of Himalayan peaks. Overnight: Dingboche

5

Day 5

Day 5 – Dingboche → Lobuche

Trek: approx. 6.6km Today we move into the true high mountains. Our route climbs towards Lobuche, passing dramatic glacial terrain and memorials dedicated to climbers who have lost their lives on Everest. At this altitude our pace becomes deliberately steady as we prepare for the following day's journey to Base Camp. Overnight: Lobuche

6

Day 6

Day 6 – Lobuche → Gorak Shep → Everest Base Camp

Trek: approx. 9km One of the defining days of the adventure. We trek towards Gorak Shep, the final settlement before Everest Base Camp, before continuing across the rugged glacial moraine alongside the Khumbu Glacier. Our destination is Everest Base Camp – 5,364m. Standing beneath the world's highest mountain and looking towards the spectacular Khumbu Icefall is a moment that will stay with you long after the trek is over. After celebrating our arrival, we return to Gorak Shep for the night. Overnight: Gorak Shep

7

Day 7

Day 7 – Kala Patthar → Pheriche

Trek: approx. 11km An early start takes us towards Kala Patthar, reaching approximately 5,545m – the highest point of our adventure. While Everest itself isn't clearly visible from Base Camp, Kala Patthar provides the classic elevated viewpoint towards Everest and the surrounding Himalayan giants. After taking in the panorama, we descend through Gorak Shep and continue down the valley towards Pheriche. Overnight: Pheriche

8

Day 8

Day 8 – Pheriche → Namche Bazaar

Trek: approx. 14.2km With much of the climbing now behind us, we continue our descent through the Khumbu. As oxygen levels increase and we return towards greener valleys, we'll retrace sections of our route before arriving once again in the bustling mountain town of Namche Bazaar. Overnight: Namche Bazaar

9

Day 9

Day 9 – Namche Bazaar → Lukla

Trek: approx. 13.6km Our final full trekking day takes us down through the Dudh Koshi valley, crossing suspension bridges and passing familiar Sherpa settlements. Eventually we make the final climb into Lukla, where we can celebrate completing our Everest Base Camp journey. Overnight: Lukla

10

Day 10

Day 10 – Lukla → Kathmandu

Weather permitting, we'll take our return mountain flight from Lukla and leave the Himalayas behind as we return to Kathmandu. It's the end of an extraordinary ten days – from the valleys of the Khumbu to Everest Base Camp and more than 5,500 metres above sea level.

Fitness & Experience

Fitness & Experience Fitness Level: Challenging The Everest Base Camp Trek does not require technical climbing or mountaineering experience, but this 10-day version should not be underestimated. This is a fast-paced high-altitude trekking itinerary involving consecutive days of mountain walking and sleeping progressively higher in the Himalayas. Participants should be comfortable: Walking for approximately 5–7 hours on consecutive days Trekking on rough, rocky and uneven mountain trails Managing sustained climbs and descents Carrying a small day pack Walking at a steady pace for several consecutive days Operating in cold and potentially changeable mountain conditions The biggest challenge – altitude Fitness alone does not protect someone from altitude illness. Everest Base Camp sits at approximately 5,364m, with our highest point on Kala Patthar at around 5,545m. At these elevations the reduced availability of oxygen makes walking considerably harder than an equivalent day in the UK. The classic Everest Base Camp itinerary normally includes dedicated acclimatisation periods around Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. This shortened itinerary removes those full rest/acclimatisation days, making careful pacing, monitoring and appropriate altitude management particularly important. For this reason, AZOW recommends this particular itinerary for trekkers who already have a strong level of endurance fitness and preferably previous experience of multi-day mountain walking.
