Trip Overview

Everything you need to know about the experience, environment and journey ahead.

One of Europe's great long-distance trails, the Kungsleden – the King's Trail – crosses the spectacular wilderness of Swedish Lapland. Our journey follows the classic northern section from Abisko to Nikkaluokta, travelling for approximately 105 km through Abisko National Park and some of the most impressive mountain scenery in Scandinavia. We'll stay in traditional Swedish mountain huts along the route, carrying everything we need as we journey south through huge glacial valleys, alongside mountain lakes and rivers, over the high point of Tjäktja Pass and eventually beneath Sweden's highest mountain, Kebnekaise. This is a genuine point-to-point wilderness adventure: remote enough to feel like an expedition, but with the comfort and atmosphere of the Swedish mountain hut network each evening. The Itinerary

1

Day 1

Day 1 – Arrival in Abisko

Arrive in northern Sweden and travel to Abisko, approximately 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. We'll meet at Abisko Tourist Station, settle into our accommodation and have time to explore the immediate surroundings. In the evening we'll have a full trip briefing, equipment check and discussion about the week ahead. Overnight: Abisko Tourist Station Trekking: None

2

Day 2

Day 2 – Abisko → Abiskojaure

Distance: ~15 km Walking time: 4–5 hours Our Kungsleden journey begins at Abisko Tourist Station and immediately enters the spectacular landscape of Abisko National Park. We'll follow the Abiskojåkka river south through birch woodland and increasingly open mountain terrain. Our first day provides a relatively gentle introduction to the trail before reaching Abiskojaure, beautifully positioned beside the lake. Overnight: Abiskojaure Mountain Hut

3

Day 3

Day 3 – Abiskojaure → Alesjaure

Distance: ~21 km Walking time: 6–8 hours A longer day sees us leave the woodland behind and enter the open mountain landscape for which the Kungsleden is famous. The trail climbs gradually before crossing expansive plateaus surrounded by mountains. Eventually we'll reach the impressive Alesjaure huts, overlooking the huge Alesjaure lake and surrounding valleys. Overnight: Alesjaure Mountain Hut

4

Day 4

Day 4 – Alesjaure → Tjäktja

Distance: ~13 km Walking time: 4–5 hours A shorter but increasingly mountainous day as we continue south. The landscape becomes progressively more dramatic as we travel deeper into Swedish Lapland, following the valley towards the mountains surrounding Tjäktja. Our destination is the remote Tjäktja Mountain Hut, positioned beneath the pass we'll cross the following morning. Overnight: Tjäktja Mountain Hut

5

Day 5

Day 5 – Tjäktja → Tjäktja Pass → Sälka

Distance: ~12 km Walking time: 4–6 hours One of the standout days of the entire journey. From the hut we'll climb towards Tjäktjapasset, at approximately 1,150 metres and the highest point on the Kungsleden. From the pass we'll have spectacular views into the enormous Tjäktjavagge valley before beginning our descent. We'll then continue through increasingly dramatic mountain scenery to the huts at Sälka. Overnight: Sälka Mountain Hut

6

Day 6

Day 6 – Sälka → Singi

Distance: ~12 km Walking time: 3–5 hours A slightly easier day provides an opportunity to enjoy the scale and remoteness of the landscape. We'll follow the broad valley south, surrounded by rugged mountains, rivers and huge open spaces. At Singi we'll leave the main Kungsleden trail and turn east towards the Kebnekaise massif. Overnight: Singi Mountain Hut

7

Day 7

Day 7 – Singi → Kebnekaise Mountain Station

Distance: ~14–15 km Walking time: 4–6 hours Today we leave the Kungsleden itself and head deeper into the mountains towards Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest mountain. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as we approach the Kebnekaise massif. Our destination is Kebnekaise Mountain Station, a welcome return to greater facilities after several nights in the remote mountain huts. Overnight: Kebnekaise Mountain Station

8

Day 8

Day 8 – Kebnekaise → Nikkaluokta

Distance: ~19 km Walking time: 5–7 hours Our final trekking day takes us away from Kebnekaise and towards Nikkaluokta. We'll gradually leave the high mountains behind as the landscape changes to lower valleys, lakes and birch woodland. Eventually we'll reach Nikkaluokta, completing our journey across approximately 105 km of Swedish Lapland. A fantastic finish to a week travelling entirely on foot through one of Europe's great wilderness landscapes. Overnight: Nikkaluokta / Kiruna area

Is This Trip For You?

Fitness & Experience

Fitness & Experience This trip is suitable for fit and active hillwalkers who are comfortable walking for consecutive days while carrying a backpack. You don't need previous alpine or technical mountaineering experience. However, participants should be comfortable walking 15–20+ km in a day, spending up to 6–8 hours on the trail and travelling over rough, rocky and occasionally wet terrain. The challenge comes less from technical difficulty and more from the consecutive trekking days, carrying equipment, variable Arctic weather and remote environment. A good level of cardiovascular fitness and regular hillwalking before the trip will make the experience considerably more enjoyable.
