The Adventure

Trip Overview

Crib Goch Horseshoe The Crib Goch Horseshoe is one of the most spectacular and committing mountain journeys in Eryri, combining exposed scrambling, narrow ridges and the summit of Yr Wyddfa into an unforgettable full mountain day. Starting from Pen y Pass, we initially follow the Pyg Track before branching away at Bwlch y Moch and beginning the ascent of Crib Goch. The terrain quickly becomes steeper and rockier before reaching the famous knife-edge ridge itself. Crib Goch is a Grade 1 scramble and provides sustained exposure, hands-on movement and incredible views across the Yr Wyddfa massif. After negotiating the main ridge and pinnacles, the journey continues over Crib y Ddysgl and Garnedd Ugain, before reaching the summit of Yr Wyddfa at 1,085m. Rather than taking one of the normal paths back down, the adventure continues around the opposite side of the horseshoe towards Y Lliwedd. This provides another superb section of mountain terrain and scrambling before eventually descending to the Miners’ Track and returning to Pen y Pass. At approximately 12 km with around 900–1,200m of ascent, this is a substantial mountain day, normally requiring around 6–10 hours depending on the group and conditions. The Crib Goch Horseshoe is much more than an ascent of Yr Wyddfa. It is a complete mountain journey and a fantastic choice for those looking to experience some of the finest exposed scrambling and ridge terrain in North Wales.

Fitness & Experience

Is This Adventure Right for You?

A good level of mountain fitness is essential. The route involves sustained ascent, rough and rocky terrain, scrambling and many hours on the mountain. You must also have a good head for heights. Crib Goch contains significant and sustained exposure, and once committed to the main ridge there are very limited opportunities to retreat. Eryri National Park describes Crib Goch as a 500-metre knife-edge ridge and warns that it should only be attempted by experienced mountain walkers. Previous scrambling experience is strongly recommended. If you are unsure whether your previous experience is suitable, contact AZOW before booking and we can discuss whether this is the right adventure for you. Because conditions have such a significant effect on Crib Goch, the final route will always be subject to the weather and mountain conditions on the day. Strong winds, wet rock, ice or poor visibility can make the ridge considerably more serious.
