Jacks Rake Grade 1 Scramble

tarting from New Dungeon Ghyll in Great Langdale, this classic Lake District mountain day begins with the steep and scenic climb alongside Stickle Ghyll, passing waterfalls and rocky cascades as we make our way towards Stickle Tarn. From the tarn, the impressive face of Pavey Ark dominates the skyline, with Jack’s Rake cutting diagonally across the crag. We make our way beneath the face to reach the start of the scramble before beginning the ascent of this famous Grade 1 route. Jack’s Rake provides sustained hands-on scrambling through rocky grooves, short chimneys and increasingly exposed sections as we climb across the face of Pavey Ark. Despite its Grade 1 classification, it is a serious scramble and can feel considerably more challenging than many other routes of the same grade, particularly when the rock is wet. Emerging onto the top of Pavey Ark, we can extend the adventure across the Langdale Pikes, taking in summits such as Harrison Stickle, Pike of Stickle and Loft Crag, before making the descent back into Great Langdale and returning to Dungeon Ghyll. A circuit taking in these summits is around 7–9 km with roughly 750–850m of ascent, depending on the exact route chosen.
