Trip Overview
Nantlle Ridge Circular – Rhyd Ddu
The Nantlle Ridge Circular from Rhyd Ddu is one of Eryri’s finest mountain journeys, combining steep mountain walking, an exciting rocky ridge, exposed scrambling and outstanding views across some of North Wales’ most dramatic scenery.
Starting from the village of Rhyd Ddu, the route begins with a steady approach before climbing steeply onto Y Garn. From here the character of the day changes as we join the Nantlle Ridge and make our way towards Mynydd Drws-y-coed.
This is the highlight of the route, with a narrow and rocky ridge providing enjoyable scrambling and some exposed sections where a good head for heights is useful. Beyond Mynydd Drws-y-coed, the terrain becomes easier as we continue across the ridge to Trum y Ddysgl and onwards towards Mynydd Tal-y-mignedd, easily recognised by the impressive stone obelisk standing on its summit.
After enjoying the ridge, we retrace part of our route before leaving the main crest and descending towards Bwlch-y-Ddwy-elor. The return journey takes us through Beddgelert Forest, providing a complete change of scenery before eventually returning to Rhyd Ddu.
A typical version of this circular is around 11–13 km, with approximately 850–900 metres of ascent and normally takes around 5–7 hours, depending on conditions and the group.
This is a fantastic choice for walkers wanting to progress beyond straightforward mountain hiking and experience a more adventurous ridge day. The exposed sections, scrambling and navigation required make it a rewarding introduction to more technical mountain terrain — all while exploring a quieter side of Eryri away from the busier routes on Yr Wyddfa.
