The Adventure

Trip Overview

The National Three Peaks Challenge is one of the UK’s most iconic mountain challenges, taking on the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales as part of one continuous adventure. The challenge begins with Ben Nevis (1,345m) near Fort William, the highest mountain in the UK. After completing the ascent and descent, we travel south into the Lake District to tackle Scafell Pike (978m), England’s highest mountain. From the Lake District, the journey continues into North Wales for the final mountain, Yr Wyddfa / Snowdon (1,085m). Reaching the final summit is a fantastic conclusion to a demanding challenge involving three very different mountain environments. Across the three mountains, participants will cover approximately 37 km / 23 miles on foot with around 3,000 metres of ascent, in addition to the considerable road travel between each mountain. The traditional National Three Peaks Challenge is often associated with attempting to complete the entire challenge within 24 hours. Whether undertaken against the clock or over a more relaxed schedule, it requires determination, preparation and the ability to keep moving efficiently over demanding mountain terrain. Fitness & Experience

Is This Adventure Right for You?

A very good level of endurance fitness is essential for the National Three Peaks Challenge. Participants need to complete three substantial mountain ascents while also coping with limited recovery time and long periods of travelling between the mountains. You should be comfortable with long mountain days, sustained climbing and descending, rocky and uneven terrain and walking in potentially poor weather or darkness. Previous mountain walking experience is strongly recommended. Although the standard routes do not normally involve technical scrambling, tiredness, darkness and changing mountain conditions can make relatively straightforward terrain considerably more demanding. Good preparation is a major part of successfully completing the challenge. Participants should undertake regular hill walking and endurance training beforehand so they arrive physically prepared for three major mountain ascents. Throughout the challenge, AZOW will manage the mountain sections, pacing and group safety, allowing you to concentrate on the challenge itself and the incredible achievement of standing on the highest summits of Scotland, England and Wales.
