The Adventure

Trip Overview

The North Ridge of Tryfan is one of the great mountain adventures of Eryri and a fantastic introduction to sustained scrambling on one of Wales’ most iconic peaks. Starting from Ogwen Valley, we climb directly towards Tryfan’s unmistakable rocky skyline. As height is gained, normal mountain walking gradually gives way to increasingly rocky terrain and hands-on scrambling. The North Ridge offers numerous route choices, allowing the day to be adapted to the experience and confidence of the group. Along the way we tackle rocky steps, slabs and short scrambling sections before continuing towards the summit of Tryfan at 917m. Reaching the famous Adam and Eve stones marks the summit, with spectacular views across the Glyderau, Carneddau and Ogwen Valley. The descent completes a superb mountain journey and provides further opportunities to develop confidence moving over steep and rocky terrain. Start/Finish: Ogwen Valley Summit: Tryfan – 917m Distance: Approximately 6–8 km depending on route Ascent: Approximately 650–750 m Duration: Approximately 5–7 hours Difficulty: Challenging Scrambling Grade: Grade 1 Terrain: Steep rocky ground, sustained scrambling, exposed sections and mountain paths

Fitness & Experience

Is This Adventure Right for You?

Fitness & Experience A good level of hill fitness is required for the North Ridge of Tryfan. Although the overall distance isn't particularly long, progress over scrambling terrain is considerably slower and more physically demanding than normal hillwalking. Previous scrambling experience is helpful but not essential for a guided day, making this an excellent option for people looking to progress from mountain walking into scrambling. You should be comfortable using your hands on rock and have a reasonable head for heights, as there are exposed sections where confident movement is important. The route is highly weather dependent. Wet rock, strong winds or poor visibility can significantly increase the difficulty, and the exact line may be adapted to suit the conditions and the experience of the group. Throughout the day, AZOW will manage route choice, navigation, pacing and group safety, while also helping you develop better scrambling movement and confidence on steep mountain terrain.
