The Adventure

Trip Overview

The challenge begins in Eryri with an ascent of Yr Wyddfa (1,085m), the highest mountain in Wales. From here, we travel south to Cadair Idris, where a second substantial mountain journey takes us into one of the most impressive landscapes in southern Eryri. After completing Cadair Idris, we continue south into the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) for the final ascent of Pen y Fan (886m), the highest mountain in South Wales. Together, the three mountains involve approximately 27 km / 17 miles of walking and around 2,300 metres of ascent, alongside the road journey through Wales connecting each mountain. It is a superb endurance challenge, combining three very different mountain environments and providing a memorable journey through some of the finest landscapes Wales has to offer. Fitness & Experience

Is This Adventure Right for You?

A very good level of fitness and endurance is required for the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge. Although none of the standard routes require technical scrambling, completing three separate mountain ascents with travelling between them creates a long and physically demanding challenge. Participants should be comfortable with sustained uphill walking, long descents and moving efficiently over rocky, steep and uneven mountain terrain. Depending on the schedule and time of year, sections of the challenge may also be completed in darkness. Previous hillwalking experience is strongly recommended, along with appropriate preparation and training in the weeks leading up to the event. Throughout the challenge, AZOW will manage the mountain sections, group pacing and safety, allowing you to concentrate on completing each mountain and enjoying the journey from North to South Wales.
