The Adventure

Trip Overview

Starting from Horton-in-Ribblesdale, the route heads first towards Pen-y-ghent, where a steep final climb leads to the first summit of the day. From here, the journey continues across open countryside towards the impressive Ribblehead Viaduct before beginning the long climb onto Whernside, the highest of the three peaks. After descending from Whernside, the route turns towards the distinctive shape of Ingleborough. A steep ascent brings us onto the summit plateau and the final peak of the challenge, before the long descent and return journey to Horton-in-Ribblesdale. The full route covers approximately 39 km / 24 miles with around 1,500 metres of ascent, making this a substantial endurance challenge. Traditionally, participants aim to complete the circuit within 12 hours, although our focus is on completing the journey safely and enjoying the challenge rather than simply chasing the clock. It is a fantastic objective for walkers wanting to test their endurance, take on a recognised UK mountain challenge and experience some of the best scenery in the Yorkshire Dales. Fitness & Experience

Is This Adventure Right for You?

A good level of endurance fitness is essential for the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Although the route does not involve technical scrambling, the combination of approximately 24 miles of walking, significant ascent and many hours on your feet makes this a physically demanding mountain day. You should be comfortable walking for 10–12 hours or more over a mixture of mountain paths, rocky terrain and uneven ground. Previous experience of longer hill walks is strongly recommended. The challenge is suitable for determined walkers who have prepared appropriately, and your AZOW guide will manage the pace and provide support throughout the journey. Weather and ground conditions can significantly increase the difficulty, so participants should arrive properly equipped and prepared for a long day in the hills
